It seemed that Hanson, an alumnus of the Class of 2024, was everywhere you looked at Wellington College Education (China) – Tianjin. If he wasn’t leading a pupil government meeting, he was scoring goals on the pitch, and if he wasn’t doing that, he was lighting up the stage in a school performance. And he was doing all this while his fellow pupils were buckling down for university admissions season.

Some thought he was spreading himself too thin. None of it slowed Hanson down. In fact, it drove him forward.

The Power of

Having a Go

In Senior School, Hanson’s interests were broad and his degree choice uncertain. By the time he made it to Sixth Form, he took stock of his Wellington journey — Head of his boarding house, Leader of the Economists Club, House Representative, then Head of College. The common thread was clear: management. Working with different people, solving problems and handling complexity taught him invaluable lessons in both academics and life. So, he set his sights on the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), a university renowned for its social sciences and management programmes.

University proved tougher than expected. LSE draws outstanding applicants from around the world. “At the same time, the diversity at LSE has broadened my horizons enormously,” Hanson shares. “You get a chance to meet different people from different backgrounds. I think that's just really, really beneficial for us because that helps us to become a global citizen, as we always said these days.”

Outside of class, Hanson’s life at LSE is, not surprisingly, still jam-packed. He’s in the school’s choir and its drama and music societies. He plays rounders, badminton and ultimate frisbee. Many of these are talents and passions that he discovered and cultivated at Wellington Tianjin. He credits the school for helping to make him “a well-rounded, interesting person.”

“My fondest memories are of every performance I took part in at Wellington,” Hanson’s eyes light up as he recalls, “from musicals and Shakespearean plays to concerts.”

Today, Hanson brings that same energy to his studies and his life. The future is open. He’s exploring it step by step with enthusiasm and determination, putting that “Be You. Be More.” spirit into everything he does.

We call our graduates ‘Old Wellingtonians’ or OWs because, in our eyes, they never really leave us. Once a Wellingtonian, always a Wellingtonian. And it is in this spirit that we have launched We.Connect, a new alumni platform that brings the Wellington College Education (China) Community a wide range of benefits — from networking opportunities to mentorship programmes and so much more.
