On stage, she is a dancer and actress known for her expressiveness and energy, bringing stories to life through movement and emotion. Off stage, she describes herself as a quiet introvert. She is Cheryl, a 2023 graduate of Wellington College International Shanghai, and is now reading psychology at University College London (UCL).

Roots and Wings

Cheryl’s journey with Wellington began in 2015. Over eight years, she became known for the intriguing contrasts she embodies. She is reserved, often found in the library, absorbed in books. Yet she is also bold, captivating audiences as the closing act in the school’s Have to Dance showcase, and taking leading roles in productions such as Chicago and The Wizard of Oz.

For Cheryl, being an introvert doesn’t mean shying away from others; rather, she finds energy in solitude. Dance has always been her creative outlet—a way to express emotions that words cannot capture. Stillness and movement, quiet and exuberance, coexist in her with ease.

Finding Her Rhythm

When applying to university, Cheryl was already set on studying psychology. She believes the subject not only helps us to understand ourselves, but also has wide-ranging relevance in fields like education and technology.

Although she seems calm and assured now, Cheryl’s had her fair share of challenges in her early days at UCL. Adjusting to life far from home initially left her feeling a little removed from the bustle of university life. In time, by looking inward and remaining open to new experiences, she found her footing.

Dance continues to be an important part of Cheryl’s life at UCL. These days, she is more involved in choreography and creative planning, taking part in competitions and exchanges with dance teams from other universities. This has given her the chance to meet fellow dancers from around the world and collect memorable experiences well beyond the UK.

Balancing introspection with outward engagement, Cheryl is on a journey that continues to shape her as a person. Having stepped beyond her comfort zone, she now moves confidently towards new horizons, pursuing her ambitions with poise and passion.

Here is Cheryl in her own words,

sharing her experience.

We call our graduates ‘Old Wellingtonians’ or OWs because, in our eyes, they never really leave us. Once a Wellingtonian, always a Wellingtonian. And it is in this spirit that we have launched We.Connect, a new alumni platform that brings the Wellington College Education (China) Community a wide range of benefits — from networking opportunities to mentorship programmes and so much more.
