Deputy head Senior School

The Senior School at Wellington Shanghai encompasses years 9-13 and has 280 pupils currently. The school is growing quickly, filling naturally from pupils in larger year groups further down the College. In addition to the deputy head there are three assistant heads in the Senior School (curriculum, sixth form and teaching and learning) all of whom work together with the Head of Senior School in leading this section of the College. The College is academically selective which is reflected in the excellent results for the IB diploma programme: 2019 average of 36.6. These are supported by strong results at IGCSE (72% 7-9) and further by exceptionally strong teaching in years 8 and below.

The deputy head of the Senior School is responsible for running the Senior School on a daily basis so that the school fulfils its aims of providing pupils with a well-rounded, challenging education. The deputy head must have the ability to understand and work with impact across all aspects of the school, including the taught curriculum and the co-curriculum, to engage positively with pupils, staff, parents, outside agencies and College or Wellington College China group-level leadership, and to promote consistently the values and vision of Wellington College International Shanghai.

The successful candidate is expected to provide and model effective leadership of staff and pupils, in line with the values of the College. As a highly-skilled and sensitive communicator, they will be able to ensure accurate and timely representation of views from across all the various parts of the school community. Given the central role that houses play in the daily life of the school and its organisation, the deputy head will assume responsibility for line managing the team of housemasters. Housemasters are responsible for academic and pastoral welfare of pupils in their houses.

The deputy head is expected to have a teaching commitment of up to 20 hours per fortnight, dependent on subject specialism(s) and demand within those areas.

Head of aquatics

The College is seeking an experienced professional to lead swimming at all levels within the College.

Building on the growing strength of the programme the new head of aquatics will be instrumental in strategy formation and management of all key aspects of swimming. This will include working on, developing, training, supporting and promoting swimming as a sport – from top level competitive swimming through to entry level inclusion programmes. The successful candidate will embrace the competitive swim programme throughout the year and enjoy being the public face of ‘swimming at Wellington’ at events. They will act as an advocate and promoter of swimming as a sport generally.

Reporting to the director of sport, the head of aquatics will work with academic teams, including the director of higher education, to ensure pupil support for College pathways. They will work to develop (in conjunction with curriculum leaders) swimming lessons as part of the normal PE structure where they will teach swimming within the PE department, leading on aspects of curriculum design where helpful to do so.

Head of geography

The College is looking to appoint a passionate head of department for Geography (years 6 to 13) from August 2020. The appointed individual will have responsibility for the continued development of all aspects of our curriculum including the IGCSE and IB courses.

The head of department will lead an experienced and dynamic team consisting of four other members of staff. Our curriculum is topical, creative and engaging. We are always striving to develop it further in a collaborative manner.

Geography is a popular subject with excellent IGCSE and IB results. We are well resourced and have a fieldwork programme that incorporates local fieldtrips and an annual foreign expedition. This academic year pupils will be visiting Nepal during the Easter holiday whilst in previous years we have explored the rainforest of Borneo.

Ideally, the head of department should have a deep knowledge of the IB course or be experienced in teaching A-Level geography. Additionally, a passion for physical geography would be advantageous but not essential.

Experience of international settings is welcome, as is experience in multi-lingual environments, the UK state or independent sectors.

Head of wellbeing

The College is looking for an individual to lead on one of Wellington’s core programmes: Wellbeing. One of the first schools in the UK to offer wellbeing as a curriculum subject, Wellbeing at Wellington remains of central importance to the overarching mission of the College. The Head of Wellbeing would be responsible for delivering curriculum lessons from 6-13 as well as oversight of these year groups. Working collaboratively with wellbeing coordinators Lower Prep (years 3-5) and Pre-Prep (years 1-2), they will also have responsibility for ensuring that the wellbeing programme has an effective progression throughout.

The head of Wellbeing is responsibly for the visibility of the programme in the College and within the community. Working with parents, and particularly with the Friends of Wellington, to facilitate a series of talks for parents that complement the pupil programmes. The programmes established already are popular and positive with some scope for further expansion in areas. Within the College the successful candidate will work closely with the pastoral teams to ensure that the curriculum is joined up and reflects the needs of pupils at different stages. Working for the Director of Pupil Services enables the head of wellbeing to also be connected into the safeguarding, SEN and counselling teams at the College.

Biology teacher

The College is looking to appoint an inspiring and innovative teacher of biology. The individual will work closely with the head of biology to teach from years 9 to 13. The department currently runs integrated science for years 5-8 and specialist lessons from year 9 onwards. The college offers biology, chemistry, and physics at IGCSE and IB, with biology being highly popular and successful. The teacher of biology will also work alongside the head of department in the development of co-curricular activities and the annual science week.

The science team has specialist senior and prep school staff as well as excellent technical support. The department is exceptionally well resourced with designated laboratories and preparation rooms, as well as access to a planetarium, VR goggles, 3D printers, IPAD trolleys, and laptop trolleys.

Economics and business studies teacher

The College is looking to appoint teachers of economics (IB) and business management and studies (IB and IGCSE).

It is anticipated that the successful candidate will have a strong background in economics and experience of teaching IB (higher and standard level) economics to able and engaged pupils. Many Wellington pupils choose economics at IB in combination with a science-focused pathway or a humanities and literature pathway. The successful candidate would be open and able to teaching business studies at IGCSE (or even IB) even if they have not done so before.

New teachers would be joining an already strong and successful department, with very good IGCSE and excellent IB results. The 2019 College IB DP average was 36.6. Candidates who are able to combine excellent classroom practice and curriculum delivery with a genuine desire to inspire beyond those constraints are encouraged to apply and to help shape the further success of this exciting and popular area within the College.

Computer science teacher (primary and KS3)

We are looking to appoint an inspiring and innovative teacher of computer science and ICT. The individual will work closely with the head of computer science to teach from years 3 to 8 (the Prep School), with a majority focus on upper key stage 2. The department currently runs integrated ICT and computer science curriculums for pupils from year 1 to year 6. In year 7 pupils choose either an ICT or a computer science pathway which they continue through to the end of year 9. Currently, the College offers both IGCSE computer science and IGCSE ICT, which are both optional. The College offers IB computer science which is a growing area of interest in the pupil body and a strategic focus for the College.

The computer science team has specialist Senior and Prep school staff as well as a designated EdTech technician and IT systems support. The department is exceptionally well-resourced with class sets of VR and AR goggles, a variety of new robotic equipment, 3D printers, laptop trolleys, IPAD trolleys, as well as newly equipped computer suites.

The teacher will also work alongside the head of the department in the development of co-curricular activities, as well as the incorporation of new technologies in the wider school curriculum.

This role would be particularly suited to a teacher with extensive experience teaching ICT in Key Stage 2/3.

PE teacher (primary and KS3)

We are looking to appoint a well-qualified, enthusiastic and creative teacher of PE. Of particular interest would be applicants who enjoy and/or have experience of teaching primary age or lower secondary age children.
