Head of Prep School English

The College is looking to appoint a new head of department for Prep English from August 2020. We are looking to ignite a passion for language and literature in our pupils together with the development of sophisticated skills and this post is key to achieving this throughout the school. The role combines direct management of English teaching in years 6-8 (Upper Prep) and leadership for the subject and for coordinators in the lower years.  It also involves a close collaboration with the Head of Senior English in order to maintain our excellent rates of progress and achievement. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who has either had head of department experience and is now looking for a new and larger challenge, or someone who has had curriculum leadership and has proved management experience.

Experience in international settings is welcome, as is experience in multi-lingual environments, the UK state or independent sectors.

Our employment package is excellent, with very competitive salaries, housing, flights, insurance and other benefits. We aim to be exemplary employers and have had very low rates of teacher turnover since we opened.

Wellington College

Wellington College International Shanghai opened in August 2014 as Wellington’s second partnership school in China, and has rapidly developed a reputation as the premier international school in the city. It currently has 1,280 pupils and continues to grow by over 150 pupils per year. The College is divided into three schools, with a Senior School (years 9 to 13) and Prep School (years 1 to 8) on the main campus and Early Years (nursery and reception) in a new purpose-built centre nearby. The College curriculum combines our focus on the Wellington values with the best of English and international curriculums. The youngest children in the nursery and reception classes follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. From year 1, the English National Curriculum provides the core of the curriculum in maths and literacy, with other lessons following the International Primary Curriculum. From year 6 up, all children follow a school-devised curriculum, based on the English National Curriculum and taught by subject specialists to prepare for the study of IGCSE subjects in years 10 and 11. Pupils in years 12 and 13 follow the prestigious IB Diploma Programme.

Wellington College International Shanghai aims to be the best international school in China and to be great place for talented professionals to develop their careers. Our academic results to date have been outstanding, our IB students average above 36 points in 2018 and 2019, placing Wellington comfortably alongside the best international IB schools. Most of our IGCSE pupils gain eight or more A*-A grades, with A* being by far the most common grade.

Success in public examinations is important and we celebrate it. However, at Wellington College, excellent exam results and great university destinations, in the UK and worldwide, are only part of the picture. We want our pupils to be the very best people that they can be: to be kind, to have integrity in their actions, to take responsibility when necessary, to have respect for their environment, for others and themselves, and finally to show courage when needed. The Wellington values frame the way we think about what it is be a Wellingtonian, including the ways we work and what we hope to become.

Head of Academic Music

We are looking for a head of academic music to lead curriculum delivery in years 6 to 13. The head of academic music will manage a team of both Senior and Prep music teachers, working with departmental colleagues and providing leadership at each stage of the curriculum.

It is most like that the head of academic music will have a background in secondary school teaching, including IGCSE and either A Level or IBDP delivery. Wellington has a growing number of pupils who take IGCSE and IB examinations and results are very good. The head of academic music will also work closely with the head of performance music (who is responsible for all aspects of music outside the curriculum, including musicals, music concerts and events). The partnership between these two roles is important and each person will work across areas, with the head of academic music expected to be a significant part of the co-curricular programme. (The head of performance music will also teach curriculum lessons in the music department).

The College has achieved a significant amount in five years of operation, with the standards of performance high. There is now the ambition to take this to the next level with music playing a critical role in the College’s commitment to holistic education. The head of academic music role is an important part of this overarching ambition. The ability to work with and manage teams is critical, as is the ability to inspire pupils in their love of music.

Applications from the UK state or independent sector are particularly encouraged as are those from candidates who have IBDP or international experience.

Economics and Business teacher

The College is looking to appoint teachers of economics (IB) and business management and studies (IB and IGCSE). The department need to appoint two teachers is a reflection of the growth in pupil numbers at both IGCSE and IB.

For this role it is likely that at least one appointment will have a background in economics (university level) and experience of teaching IB (higher and standard level) economics to able and engaged pupils. Many Wellington pupils choose economics at IB in combination with a science-focused pathway or a humanities and literature pathway. The ability to teach business studies at IGCSE in combination with IBDP economics is an advantage.

The College is also looking for candidates who have experience of teaching IB business management or A Level business and who are particularly passionate about this area of the curriculum. Evidence of engagement beyond the curriculum (in areas such as Young Enterprise) would be an advantage, as would experience with all aspects of the IBDP (including extended essay supervision). New teachers would be joining an already strong and successful department, with very good IGCSE and IB results. Candidates who are able to combine excellent classroom practice and curriculum delivery with a genuine desire to inspire beyond those constraints are encouraged to apply and to help shape the further success of this exciting and popular area within the College.

The College is looking to appoint for August 2020, or earlier given the availability of successful applicants.

Our employment package is excellent, with very competitive salaries, housing, flights, insurance and other benefits. We aim to be exemplary employers and have had very low rates of teacher turnover since we opened.
