About Us

 

The Institute of Learning (IoL) is Wellington College China's academic support team for our group of schools. The IoL sits alongside specialist non-academic colleagues in the Central Office in Shanghai. 

 

IoL seeks to foster deeper thinking about what makes our education here at WCC so special. From teaching and learning to wellbeing and involvement, IoL staff work with school leaders and staff to create an environment in which learning and high aspirations flourish in our culture of shared values. 

 

Colleagues in the IoL are all experienced school leaders. Their specialisms range from Early Years, primary and secondary education to the development of bespoke Chinese programmes and educational technology. There is also a substantial training wing of the IoL, providing enrichment and professional development in initial teacher and early career teacher education, English language development and leadership courses, many of which are tied to external accreditation and qualifications including PGCEi, NPQML / SL and Cambridge PDQ. 

 

IoL colleagues are thus involved in supporting the delivery of high-quality learning, teacher training, advising on data usage within school teams and facilitating the sharing of good practice from across the group and the wider world.

 

WCC's Central Office also has a governance function, and for the IoL this means supporting our school leaders and governors in quality assuring the education we provide. Working in this capacity, IoL team members work with schools on lesson observations, analysis of school results and pupil progress data. The close relationship between schools and CO allows for effective and informed monitoring within the group and helps to hold schools accountable.  


The Wellington College China Institute of Learning (IoL) is part of the group's Central Office and has been established to  support  the delivery of the highest possible academic standards across all our schools through the provision of  advice  and professional learning opportunities to teaching 

 

 

As a passionate and experienced group of practitioners, school leaders and consultants, the Institute of Learning team has a proven track record of leading policy and reform at national level, high impact professional learning and action research, and school improvement to meet the most rigorous inspection and accreditation requirements.

Impact on policy and practice is fundamental for effective and inspiring education and alongside each school`s leadership team, the IoL is constantly measuring the improvements in learning, teaching and school performance.


Learning is greatly informed by research and the exchange of ideas. With this in mind, the IoL is always reaching out internationally to fellow educators to establish networks for the sharing of ideas as well as organisations who can enable further professional qualifications through our own action research to develop our practice even further.


Opportunity for a wide range of professional learning and training is central to what we offer and covers a wide range of CPD from across the world and within our own schools. The  range of  training available is chosen from the strategic priorities of each school as well as a way of enhancing practice to enable individuals to move onto the next stage of their career. This includes offering opportunities for our own staff to train others in their area of expertise.
