PERFORMING ARTS

Performing Arts

The performing arts plays a vital and pivotal role in the life and culture of Wellington College International Tianjin and since its opening in 2011 has made a significant impact not only internally on its students, but also within the wider community through numerous high-profile public performances and events. It is an area which fosters musical, dramatic and choreographic talent and participation by students of all ages and one which reflects the perceived importance of the arts in Education.

As well as regular formal concerts throughout each academic year, the college has become renowned for its lavish annual musical theatre productions with an average student participation of between 80 and 100 boys and girls of all ages taking part in each show. To date, Wellington has produced shows such as Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Bugsy Malone, Oliver, The Pirates of Penzance and Calamity Jane.

Pure drama has also been a feature of performing arts at Wellington, having produced plays such as Our Town by Thornton Wilder, Oedipus Rex by Sophocles and TWO by Jim Cartwright.
In terms of dance, choreography has continually played a major role in all the main school productions and features significantly as a weekly after- school activity option in both senior and junior schools. Regular assemblies, college graduation ceremonies and the annual Summer Fair all provide avenues of performance opportunities for aspiring dancers and of course singers and instrumentalists.

In addition to nurturing individual solo performers, both vocal and instrumental, the college boasts a Chamber Orchestra and 3 choirs: junior, senior and chamber. The latter outlets provide an opportunity for anyone in the college, staff and students alike, to enjoy the activity of singing and as a result usually means taking part in a concert.
In terms of the teaching curriculum, music is taught weekly throughout the school up to year 9, with the subject being offered as an option at IGCSE and A Level in years 10 and 12 respectively. Individual lessons on some instruments are also available, at an extra cost, from both the college music staff and visiting peripatetic instrumental teachers.
