SPORTS AND ATHLETICS

“PE and Sports in Wellington is amazing!

We get the opportunity to take part in a variety of interesting sports. Wellington also gives us the opportunity to compete against our friends in house sports and other international schools in competitive sports that I love!”

Sports and Athletics

The principal aim is to create an environment in which sport is seen as an essential and enjoyable part of education. In this way, the skills learnt will allow students to pursue varied sporting interests at school, University and beyond, with participation becoming the norm throughout life.

We trust in the concept of ‘health and fitness for all’ and believe that regardless of a child’s previous experience, size or shape we can help them find a physical activity to enjoy and one which they will hold with them for a lifetime. We aim to build positive experiences around sport whilst also striving for excellence in performance.  Our goal is that by the time they leave Wellington College every student will not only have an appreciation of sport but also understand the importance of physical activity on their health and wellbeing.

Within PE lessons students will experience a wide range of activities, from individual activities like swimming, athletics, exercise and fitness training through to traditional team games such as football, Tag-rugby, rounders, volleyball and basketball.  In addition to this we also offer courses at IGCSE and A Level. The department is made up of fully-qualified teachers and support staff who work together to provide excellent teaching and coaching in lessons, for the school sports teams and for our after-school sports clubs.  We are blessed with extensive sports facilities including an astro turf pitch, a 20m swimming pool, a large sports hall, a fitness suite, all-weather basketball courts and tennis court.

In addition to PE lessons, the department runs an extensive year-round programme of competitive sport and our membership of ISCOT allows competitive sport to take place between other international schools in Tianjin. Recreational sports clubs are also offered, the latter of which is part of the school’s overall Extra-Curricular Activities programme (ECAs).
