The 2024 Paris Olympics have just wrapped up, and for the past two weeks, the world was treated to an incredible display of strength, skill, speed and endurance. In this same spirit, sports are essential to a well-rounded education at Wellington College China schools. Our Wellington and Hiba schools offer comprehensive sports programmes and unique co-curricular activities that encourage pupil participation at every level of skill and ability. And we are proud to say that our pupils have excelled in a variety of regional, national and international sports events.

Showcasing talents

and promoting interschool exchange

For the past two years, pupils from all our schools have converged upon our Hiba Nantong campus for our Wellington Games. This new tradition has seen our young athletes take to the pitch and the track for a day of fun, fitness and friend-making between schools.

Likewise, this past academic year, Wellington College Tianjin held its second annual Wellington Cup Primary School swimming competition, a competition for pupils representing schools from all around the city. Team Wellington reigned supreme team in the U8 individual freestyle and U10 individual butterfly championships. Wellingtonians also took home gold medals in the U10 mixed male and female freestyle relays.

Hiba Academy Shanghai hosted the Hiba Cup, a tournament for international school athletes competing in U19 basketball, volleyball and soccer competitions. Nearly 1,300 pupils from 60 schools and clubs competed in the Shanghai Youth Sports League Swimming Competition and the Hiba Cup Yangtze River Delta Teen Swimming Invitational, with Hiba Academy Shanghai pupils winning 12 gold, 14 silver and 9 bronze medals, as well as the first-place team award

Additionally, this past April, Wellington College International Shanghai hosted the ACAMIS Soccer Tournament with the school's girls' team taking third place and the boys winning the championship.

Outstanding performances

nationally and globally

Several Wellington College China pupils have proven to be serious competitors nationally and globally. Our athletes in Tianjin took part in the annual ISCOT sports event this year, where the school's middle school girls' volleyball team placed second, the chess team won the gold medal and the girls' badminton team won the singles championships in both the middle and high school groups.

Nurturing every pupil's inner champion

Recognising this, Wellington College China schools also offer sporting opportunities tailored to every level of ability and interest. Each school is staffed with a team of passionate coaches and instructors, like PE teacher and swimming coach Jiang Xuhao. With stints as a coach in the 2013 Asian Youth Games and the 2014 Youth Olympic Games, the 2015 Yangzhou Jianzhen International Marathon, as well as winning first prize in the 2017 National Water Fitness Competition, Mr Jiang's resume is exemplary of the quality of instruction we offer at all our schools.

Our comprehensive co-curricular activities (CCA) programme gives pupils the chance to try new sports, develop new skills and build stronger friendships. In the process, they also cultivate a sense of fair play alongside valuable soft skills like teamwork, communication, leadership and resilience.

For pupils aspiring to become professional athletes, we offer scholarships and expert training to sharpen their competitive edge. One example is one G6 pupil at Hiba Academy Nantong, who earned the Holistic Education Scholarship. She is a national second-level athlete with outstanding achievements in swimming.

Our schools actively encourage pupils to explore their potential and showcase their talents. We fully support them in pursuing their aspirations, whether it is for recreation, personal development or elite competition.

As the new academic year approaches, we cannot wait to see how our pupils will bring the Olympic spirit to the pitch, the pool and the court as they strive to go faster, higher and stronger.
