Spring is in the air! It has been over a month since the Wellington College Bilingual Hangzhou team moved into our new Nursery Building on February 5, and the feeling is one of overwhelming positivity as our growing team continues working hard towards the opening of the College on August 30.

While having moved to the Nursery building for our temporary offices, the team are excitedly awaiting the time when we can occupy the entire campus.
The Wellington College Hangzhou campus covers over 78,000 square meters and hosts a range of custom built, state-of-the-art facilities that provide pupils with access to the very best academic and co-curricular opportunities.
Let us take a journey through the campus, and let our imaginations wander as we think of all the possibilities the facilities will bring for our pupils in the future.

The appearance and design of the building is inspired by the distinctive architecture at the Wellington College in England, ,and like there the inside tells a story of world-class, 21st century educational excellence. This is the true embodiment of the Wellington College ethos: A Proud Tradition – Educating for the Future.

At Wellington College, learning does not end in the classroom. Common areas and hallways are filled with bulletin boards containing pupil made artifacts. This allows pupils to feel a deep sense of pride in their work, and continue to engage in the curriculum content throughout the day. A school should be a living and breathing educational environment. Extending learning beyond classrooms allows this to happen.

The science laboratories, the art rooms and the design technology suites are designed, first and foremost, to encourage an enjoyment in both practical and theoretical work. They are also capable of creating that extra level of creativity and ambition that great scientists, artists and designers strive for and achieve. At Wellington College Bilingual Hangzhou, we know that all children are different. Our science, art and design facilities will inspire budding enthusiasts, allow them to discover new talents and interests, then nurture those talents in a meaningful way.
The Performing Arts centre caters for our musicians, dancers and thespians, with dedicated practice rooms, the dance studio, the Black Box and, for major concerts and productions, the 550- seat College Theatre; also the venue for school assemblies.

At the very heart of the school, geographically and academically, is the College library. Its focus is books and encouraging a love of reading, but it is also a multi-media centre for pupils, promoting independent study. For all Wellingtonians the library is a learning resource designed to generate a meaningful interest in, indeed love of, reading and research.

Sport is another major Wellington priority. Here, the facilities are second to none, with the sports hall, football pitch, a 400-metres all weather synthetic running track, basketball and badminton courts, and two swimming pools, including a 25 metre, six-lane competition pool. Few schools in the world are blessed with the resources available at Wellington, all designed to support our wide- ranging co-curricular activities programme, both after school and at weekends.

Of course, the campus is more than just a place for study. It is the centre of our community, and a social space for parents, staff and pupils alike as we work together to enrich the lives of our children. We have well-designed and equipped canteens, a V&A café for staff and parents, and numerous other cafeterias and social spaces throughout the campus. Our world-class catering vendor will supply the nourishment required for us to achieve our goals, providing a range of excellent foods that meet the needs of the community. The Wellington College Hangzhou campus will be a vibrant, enjoyable environment where our Wellington Community members can thrive together.

For those of our staff and pupils who will reside on campus, our comfortable, safe and well-equipped boarding house will provide everything they need. Pupils will live in twin-boarding rooms that will become their home-away-from home. Our boarding staff, led by our Boarding Master, Alison Armstrong, will arrange their schedules to ensure they live balanced lives, enjoying a range of co-curricular activities, social events and academic times, all in a safe and welcoming environment supported by our House System and Pastoral Care Programmes.

The Wellington College Bilingual Hangzhou founding team moved into the Nursery building in February 2018. We will be stationed here for the coming months, until we move into the fully completed campus. Paul Rogers, Executive Master of Wellington College Hangzhou, wrote about our excitement and happiness in his regular ‘Week Ahead’ posts.
