How Long Does it Take to Open a Wellington College?

Wellington College Hangzhou is the third campus in the Wellington College China family after Shanghai and Tianjin. The campus will be home to Wellington College Bilingual Hangzhou, the second bilingual Wellington College school in China, which will offer pupils access to the very best Wellington College educational experience supported by purpose-built state-of-the-art facilities, a robust and research-based bilingual curriculum, and of course the selection of the very best teaching staff.

How long does it take to make this dream a reality? Well, Paul Rogers, the Founding Executive Master of Wellington College Hangzhou, has been on board with the academic leadership team since August 2017, one year ahead of the official opening in August 2018. In addition to the academic team, the non-academic leaders also joined at the same time, and throughout the past year they have been adding and growing their teams at each critical stage of the process.

Of course the journey did not start there. The dream to make Wellington College Hangzhou the very best school in Hangzhou started many years ago. The bilingual curriculum has been in development for several years between British and Chinese educational leaders, and the construction and project management plans have been many years in the making. Having the founding leadership team in Hangzhou for one full year prior to the grand opening is clear evidence of the commitment and effort of Wellington College Hangzhou to prepare a world-class, high-quality bilingual school for the children of Hangzhou and beyond.

Hiring the very best teaching staff should be at the centre of every school’s efforts, and this naturally includes the founding team. The founding academic leadership team of Wellington College Bilingual Hangzhou consists of a group of senior Chinese and foreign academic staff with rich educational experience. As a school that brings together the best of British and Chinese education systems and cultures, it is critical that the cross-cultural team bring together their rich experiences and work in harmony to realise the clear Vision of the College.

Zoe Zou

Deputy Head of Primary

Zoe comes to us from Keystone Academy Beijing where she has been working as a Grade Level Leader since July 2014. Prior to that Zoe worked at Dulwich College Suzhou as Head of Junior School Mandarin and Head of Kindergarten. Although already very much involved in the project, Zoe officially joins us in July 2018.

Like the academic leadership team, our teachers are carefully selected through a variety of means. They are likeminded, passionate, professional and committed educators who follow the Wellington Values and Identity and are committed to making Wellington College Bilingual Hangzhou the very best such school in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China, Asia and the world. Below is a small sample of the talented educators who have already joined us, or will be joining in the coming months in the lead up to our month long staff induction process.

David Mackinnon

Head of Pastoral

David comes to us from Wellington College International Tianjin and we really welcome his experience having been part of a startup Wellington College in the past. He will be line managing a strong Pastoral team including our Counselling and SEN (Special Educational Needs) departments as well as our Chinese and English Support sections.

Alison Armstrong

Boarding House Mistress

Alison Armstrong has been a dedicated and passionate Boarding Housemistress at Barnard Castle School (in the North of England) since 2010. With over 20 years of teaching experience within the independent education sector, Mrs Armstrong has taught Physical Education and Sport from ages 5 through to 19.  Teaching academic Physical Education at A Level and GCSE has been an enjoyable part of her career.  She will move to Hangzhou with her family in May.

Jennifer Gaul

Head of Music

Jennifer is a musician, educator and administrator from America. From 2010 – 2017, she was the Director of Music for Dana Hall School, an elite private school for girls in Wellesley, Massachusetts. Jennifer has a wealth of experience in music and arts administration. From 2002 – 2010 she was the Executive Director of Turtle Bay Music School, a not-for-profit community music school serving more than 2,000 students of all ages in New York City.

Jason Billows

Head of P.E.

Jason is currently working as a Housemaster and Teacher of P.E. & Boys Games at Belmont, Mill Hill Prep in North London. In his previous role as Head of Rugby at King’s Ely in Cambridgeshire, Jason managed the rugby programme throughout the junior and senior school from Years 3-13. During his time at King’s, he worked for four years as an Assistant Boarding Housemaster where a significant portion of boarding students were international, many from the Asia-Pacific region.

Angela Zhou

Chinese Coordinator of Nursery

Angela Zhou has been working with us here in Hangzhou since shortly after the Chinese New Year break. Angela graduated from New Zealand Tertiary College with a Bachelor of Teaching, majoring in Early Childhood Education. She has been teaching in New Zealand at various reputable early childhood settings for over ten years.

As can be imagined with a project of this scale, there are many more teachers, educators and support specialists than can be shared in a single article. Over the coming weeks, we look forward to sharing the bios of our teaching staff. We are confident that you will share our excitement about bringing together so many wonderful educators to work together on this special project.

At Wellington College Bilingual Hangzhou, we believe strongly that the environment is crucial in all children’s  educational development.  Among other things, we have an all-weather synthetic running track, swimming pools, a premium theatre supported by performing arts facilities, large library, laboratories and cafeterias etc. All of these state-of-the-art facilities provide pupils with access to the very best learning opportunities. The construction company for our school is the same one that built Wellington College International Shanghai, which means that the construction quality and schedule will meet the rigorous Wellington College standards of excellence.

4 Bilingual Curriculum Plan

Wellington College Bilingual Hangzhou brings together the very best practices of the Chinese and British educational systems. In Early Years, Primary, Junior High and beyond, our research-based curriculum will help our children achieve the goal of becoming truly bilingual. We also understand that every child is unique and special and through our holistic approach to education, we provide a wide range of extra experiences for our children.

Early Years (Early Years 1-4)

Our innovative inquiry-based curriculum is inspired by research and pedagogy from around the world and is underpinned by a commitment to providing learning experiences that motivate children to investigate, problem solve and build meaningful relationships through play.

Primary School (Grades 1 to 6)

Our Primary School curriculum focuses on developing further the ethical behavior and good learning habits that the children begin to acquire in Early Years. The curriculum is designed to foster a pupil’s curiosity, interests, love of learning, together with a sense of wonder at the world around them.

Junior High (Grades 7 to 9)

Our Junior High curriculum particularly targets the development and mastery of the knowledge and skills required for our pupils to proceed to senior high school, ready to engage in our IGCSE and A-Level programmes. (Please note that we only open Grade 7 in the 2018-2019 academic year)

School bus

  • They are buses that are safe and reliable, have air filtering systems and monitoring apps so that the school and parents can be 100% sure the children are arriving on time, safely.
  • the School bus will be available for pupils of Grade 1-7 Wellington College holds a deep tradition for boarding. Indeed, it is viewed as an extension of our educational model and central to becoming a Wellingtonian. In China, there is also a long tradition of boarding provision, which extends back to the time of Confucius. At Wellington College Bilingual Hangzhou we seek to bring together the very best boarding practices to create an environment in which our pupils will thrive.
  • Please note that boarding is only available for grades 4 to 7 in the 2018-2019 academic year. Due to limited spaces, boarding will be assigned on a needs basis (for examples pupils who do not reside in Hangzhou) and will be assessed by the school once applications have been received. We cannot guarantee that your child will have a space in the boarding house.

-Enrollment Plan

Enrollment will be available for Early Years (Early Years1-4), Primary (Grades 1-6) and Junior High (Grade 7) in the 2018-2019 academic year. Children who are at the age of the applied grade can be enrolled without restrictions on household registration or nationality.  Application forms can be accepted from now on so if interested please submit the materials in line with the following steps.

-Admissions Process

We use OpenApply admissions management system to ensure that the admissions process is as smooth, friendly and easy as possible. Our admissions process consists of three clear steps.

Step 1: Submit an application by completing the Application form in OpenApply

If you have already created an OpenApply account: log back into the OpenApply account you created when you submitted your registration of interest by clicking the ‘Parent Login’ button.

If you have not created an OpenApply account before: submit an application and create an OpenApply parent account by clicking the ‘Apply Now’ button.

Step 2: Submit the required Application documents

Once you have submitted an application, the next step is to submit all of the required documents. A checklist of required documents can be found in your OpenApply parent account.

Step 3: Interview and classroom experience

Once you have finished the above-mentioned steps, you will be contacted by a member of the Admissions Department, who will explain more information about the College, and offer assistance with the next steps in the admissions process including interview, classroom experience, etc. By going through these steps, there will be a comprehensive understanding of your child and whether he/she is suitable to enroll or not.

Wellington College Bilingual Hangzhou is a selective school but does not select based upon academic criteria alone. In line with the ethos of the College, we aim to admit pupils with a wide range of skills and abilities. The characteristics that are considered particularly important in the selection and decision making process include:
