We are Wellington | Preparing for an ever-changing world

At Wellington College International Hangzhou, we aspire to create a caring, international community that develops well-rounded individuals with strong values and the skills and identity to thrive within an ever-changing world. In fact, this is our vision statement. Community is at the centre of all we do at Wellington, and we continuously strive to work together with our parents, staff and pupils to develop that strong sense of community that makes international schools unique. In our founding academic year, we have been joined by passionate families who share our vision. In this series of ‘We Are Wellington’ articles, we aim to tell the stories of those families and highlight the special contributions they make to our community.

This week’s article in the series is from the parents of Krisha (Year 3), where they shared their thoughts about how important it is to choose the right school and the achievements their daughter made in the founding year at Wellington College International Hangzhou.

A Third Culture Kid’s Family

We are an Indian family living in China. My husband came to Shaoxing in 2004 for the first time and found an opportunity in the textile business. I joined him and came to China in 2008. Since then we have felt China is our second home and never thought about going back to India. Both our kids were born in China, and the time came when we had to put our daughter into a good kindergarten. I never thought it was so difficult to find a decent kindergarten. Time passed and we were worried about her education. We didn’t think that the thought of moving back to own country will come to our mind just because of education. We were looking for a good international school where our kids can get a good education with good values and discipline.

The importance of choosing a school

School is VERY important. I am sure you have probably heard every grown-up in your life tell you. But the honest truth is that schooling is an absolute fundamental step to a successful life.

My happiness knew no bounds when I got the news of Wellington College coming to Hangzhou. I waited for a year until it was officially announced in 2018. I can proudly say that Krisha is the first admission to Wellington College International Hangzhou. I take the pride to be one of the founding families of Wellington College International Hangzhou.

Choosing a school is the most important point in a parent’s life. I was always very keen for a British education for my daughter as we all are very well aware that British education is not only about academics, it provides a very holistic education which helps children grow but also to be grounded in their roots. I did not give a second thought about Wellington College International Hangzhou as I was very sure and confident about the school which has developed its reputation since the 19th century. It aspires to create a caring, learning community that develops well-rounded individuals with strong values and the skills and identity to thrive within an ever-changing world.

A wide ranging of community events

It’s been just nine months and it doesn’t feel like it’s the founding year of the school. There has been so many events happening every week. Also being a member of FOW (Friends of Wellington), I could sense the efforts and hard work put up by teachers and other staff members all the time, whether related to academics, sports or any other areas. In just nine months I feel like this school was running here for the past few years. It doesn’t feel like it’s still in its teething period. We have had Sports Day, Halloween celebrations, Christmas celebrations, Chinese New Year celebrations, the Festival of Education and so many other small gatherings and meeting etc.. We have so many events already lined up already.

I personally liked the tree planting event which happened recently because the school is not only doing the activities and celebrations within the boundaries but it is also teaching the pupils to take care of the environment by going GREEN. I also feel proud that it was also the opening ceremony of the ‘Wellington College Hangzhou Experiential Learning Space’ at Hangzhou Bay Park.

What makes Wellington different?

Most of the international schools these days provides hi-tech facilities and a wide range of activities after school but no school teaches values and integrity. That’s where a Wellington education is different than other schools.

I can proudly say my daughter is a Wellingtonian. I remember her first day of the school and she was so proud to be going to the new school. Since then I have seen a big difference in her. She has become more responsible, mature and independent.

I would say there is no better school for expats than Wellington in China. It’s a home away from home where they socialise, get educated, inspired and do all the activities that a parent thinks of giving to their child.

Being in China, knowing Mandarin is a must and the school gives equal importance to a second language too. I had not imagined Krisha will go to level 2 in Mandarin so soon. I am so proud she can read and write Mandarin as equally well as English.

My daughter has developed a good sense of intellectual rigor, where she thinks critically in other areas beyond the curriculum. She is being more kind and responsible as an individual. In all I am seeing her growing as a true Wellingtonian with moral values, more responsible towards others and the environment, being courageous and overcoming her fears.

I am looking forward to being a part of Wellington College International Hangzhou as it grows and becomes better each day. If you are interested in joining our community, get in touch today!
