We Are Wellington | Finding Belonging in a Close-knit Community

At Wellington College International Hangzhou, we aspire to create a caring, international community that develops well-rounded individuals with strong values and the skills and identity to thrive within an ever-changing world. In fact, this is our vision statement. Community is at the centre of all we do at Wellington, and we continuously strive to work together with our parents, staff and pupils to develop that strong sense of community that makes international schools unique. In this series of ‘We Are Wellington’ articles, we aim to tell the stories of those families and highlight the special contributions they make to our community.

This week’s article in the series is from the mother of Tony (Year 4) and Bella (Year 2), who shares her family’s feelings about the Wellington community, and how Tony and Bella have changed and grown during their time here.

Strong Sense of Belonging

My two children have been members of Wellington College International Hangzhou since its founding year. After joining, I could immediately feel the warmth, joy and strong sense of belonging that comes with being a member of the community and Wellington family. Our parents are united. Some of the parents I met at school have become my good friends and kindly offer to support me when I need their help.

There are diverse events and activities held by the school throughout the year, including the Festival of Education, Summer Carnival, Science Week, and Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony. What I appreciate most about the community events are the strong balance of Chinese and Western elements. My favourite event last year was Chinese Culture Day that included making dumplings with pupils and parents; because I felt my children could better understand Chinese culture by experiencing it for themselves.

All family members are encouraged to participate in these community events, and this atmosphere at Wellington College International Hangzhou has gradually changed the way my husband interacts with our children. Previously, he rarely joined our children’s school activities. Here at Wellington, however, he saw so many fathers participating in their own children’s lives that he was inspired to become more engaged himself.

The frequent communication between teachers and parents also gives me a stronger sense of belonging. The teachers care about our children and pay careful attention to their personal and academic development. When they talk to me about my children’s performance at school, I feel like they are my close friends, offering the best support to both Tony and Bella.

A Choice Benefits Children for a Lifetime

I chose Wellington College International Hangzhou for both of my children because I think Wellington College China is the best group of international schools in China. Its education not only focuses on pupils’ academic development, but also their development as a human being. The education at Wellington helps pupils to identity their personal strengths and develop themselves in a more well-rounded way.

When my children visited the campus of Wellington College International Hangzhou for the first time, they were deeply attracted by its British-style architecture and beautiful campus environment. The teachers and pupils are also very kind, and my children have made many friends here.

Believe it or not, what I hear the most from my children on holidays is that they want to go back to school. They feel that going to school is the happiest part of their lives, and they know they can expect fruitful and joyful days at Wellington College International Hangzhou.

Learning on Their Own Initiative

After studying at the school for a year, my six-year-old daughter Bella discovered her interest in sports, such as playing basketball and swimming. When I swam with her this summer, I was surprised to find she could swim without arm rings.

The best learning habit Bella cultivated over the past year is that she has started to learn using her own initiative. The course planning and environment at school are crucial to children’s learning motivation. The school courses and activities were very appealing to Bella, so she naturally began devoting much of her attention to her school life.

As for Tony, my nine-year-old son, he experienced visible growth in English language proficiency and personality development. Before studying at Wellington College International Hangzhou, he was even too shy to say “hello”. Therefore, I worried that he might not be able to adapt to the English-speaking environment at Wellington College International Hangzhou. Thanks to the efforts made by Tony’s teachers, Tony has become more outgoing and confident.

Teachers at Wellington educate each pupil based on his or her needs and personality. Each child is given personalised care and guidance from their teachers. No pupil will be left behind because of their abilities or levels of learning. If some pupils are struggling with certain materials, the teachers will spare no effort to provide specialised tutoring and ensure they will receive the support they need to reach the level of other pupils. I was glad to hear that Tony has made friends with pupils from Year 1 to Year 4; many younger pupils enjoy playing with him. I think that without the professional and dedicated guidance from the school’s teachers, my children would not have achieved such growth or development in only one year.

Considering the noticeable growth of my children and the strong sense of community at Wellington College International Hangzhou, I am sure that I have made the right decision for my two children. As a young school, Wellington College International Hangzhou might not be perfect, but it is giving the space necessary for me and my children to keep growing as we shape our future together.
