Alex is a true Wellingtonian and he wrote after his appointment:
“I am very excited to be a part of Wellington College, Shanghai. After spending three years in Wellington College, Tianjin, I am fully aware of the outstanding reputation both schools have here in China and in the U.K. For me as Director of Sport to have the chance to be able to work within world-class sports facilities with such an impressive team of staff is a fantastic opportunity.
“Sport has always been a major passion in my life and I feel very fortunate to have had such great experiences from playing competitively. My main sport is Rugby which I have played to National level through the Welsh Youth System and then this led to me playing for Gloucester U.21s, Exeter Chiefs, Launceston and then in Brisbane, Australia, for two seasons. In addition to Rugby I was also a competitive swimmer and athlete in my youth. I am still a very keen all round sportsman and enjoy keeping fit by playing Badminton, Golf, Football, Netball and all water sports.
“My philosophy for PE is to encourage sport and healthy living for all students. At Wellington Shanghai we will be providing a wide range of sporting opportunities for your sons and daughters to become involved in, not only in lessons but also during our after-school activities programme. I believe competitive and recreational clubs in extracurricular hours underpin a student’s desire to continue sports activities beyond their school life. It is for this reason that we put such an important emphasis on sports participation here at Wellington.”
Alex moved to Shanghai with his wife and two children who are very enthusiastic about having the opportunity to live in one of the world’s most vibrant cities.
