A Precious Gift for Hangzhou’s Future

Wellington College Hangzhou Hand-Over Ceremony and Official Launch of Wellington College International Hangzhou Take Place

Wellington College International Hangzhou will officially open its doors to pupils this coming September, just a week after the opening of Huili School Hangzhou, both housed in the Wellington College Hangzhou campus. The two schools are designed to offer a world-class holistic education to children both from local community and expatriate families in Hangzhou and the greater Zhejiang Province.  The emphasise is on the cultivation of  21st Century skills, with a view to develop pupils into global citizens. The outcome of such an education is a child characterised by the Wellington Identity: Inspired, Intellectual, Independent, Individual and Inclusive. That is, pupils who leave these schools will have the skills and character required to become successful not only in further education, but in broader society.

On 28th June 2018, the official hand-over ceremony for the Wellington College Hangzhou campus, home to Huili School Hangzhou and Wellington College International Hangzhou, was held in Xiaoshan Innovation Polis in Hangzhou. In addition, a ceremony to mark the official launch of Wellington College International Hangzhou took place. Mr. Ye Jianhong, Member of the Standing Committee under the Xiaoshan District Committee, Director of the Administrative Committee of the Xiaoshan Economic and Technological Development Area, Ms. Joy Qiao, Chair of Governors of Wellington College China, Mr. Paul Rogers, Founding Executive Master of Wellington College Hangzhou, and Mr. Xu Guanju, Chairman of Transfar Group, along with relevant media guests, attended this milestone event in the history of Wellington College Hangzhou.  The timely completion of the campus means that the establishment of Huili School Hangzhou and Wellington College International Hangzhou has entered the final stage, making them fully ready to open this coming fall.

During the ceremony, pupil representatives in school uniforms handed over the “Keys to the Campus” symbolizing the completion of the construction of the school to Mr. Yang Baizhang President of Xiaoshan Innovation Polis, who in turn formally presented the key to Mr. Rogers.

Filled with confidence, Mr. Rogers said, “I have to say that since that official launch of the strategic partnership between Wellington College China and the Xiaoshan Innovation Polis on January 11, 2017, the project has run extremely smoothly. We are now in an immensely strong position to be able to open up our school to pupils in just over 2 months’ time, ready and secure in the knowledge that we are able to offer that excellent education we promised way back in January 2017. Taking this key symbolises that readiness, demonstrating that our world-class facilities are completed well in advance of our school opening. Embodying our great heritage from Wellington College with more than 158 years history, and bringing best practices from our Wellington College China sister schools, we are dedicating world-class educational resources to Hangzhou. This is a precious gift for the future of this fine city.”

Together with the school’s key management team, Mr. Rogers has worked diligently on the preparation of the schools, developing the curriculum and recruiting teachers since August 2017. All the first-rate teaching staff have been recruited from international job fairs through a rigorous process, and will be arrive on August 1st followed by one month of intensive on-the-job training.

The Wellington College Hangzhou campus is the largest of the Wellington College China family, with a total area of 74,000 square meters. The purpose-built world-class campus is located in the China Xiaoshan Innovation Polis, 22 kilometres east of downtown Hangzhou. The campus is designed to offer pupils the very best learning environment with a wide variety of facilities to accommodate the various academic and co-curricular opportunities on offer.

The school uses softer, pastel designs for inner decorations to create a peaceful learning environment for pupils. These are complemented with bright, colourful public spaces that inspire risk-taking and creativity. The inner layout of each building is pupil-oriented, where teachers can encourage individual development as well as team work to build children’s self-confidence. This balanced learning environment provides a solid foundation for the well-rounded development of the pupils.

The Wellington College tradition provides challenging, invigorating and enjoyable learning opportunities, featuring academic excellence and a wide range of co-curricular activities such as sport, arts, and music. The science laboratories, art rooms and design technology suites are designed, first and foremost, to encourage enjoyment in both practical and theoretical work. They also provide that extra level of creativity and ambition that great scientists, artists and designers strive for and achieve.

Few schools in the world are blessed with the resources available at Wellington College Hangzhou, all designed to support a wide-ranging co-curricular activities programme, both after school and at weekends. The sports facilities comprise a 1,500 square metre sports hall, standard football pitch, 400-metre all-weather synthetic running track, basketball and badminton courts, and two swimming pools, including a 25 metre, six-lane competition pool with Colorado competition timing system. The College’s Performing Arts Centre caters for their musicians, dancers, and thespians, with dedicated practice rooms, a dance studio, the Black Box theatre, and the College theatre with a capacity of 560 seats.

The services available at Wellington College International Hangzhou and Huili School Hangzhou mirror this commitment to quality. Fourteen bus lines cover most areas within Hangzhou, ensuring that a wide range of pupils from across the city are able to attend the school. The school is committed to providing its pupils healthy and nourishing food. Sodexo, a first-class catering vendor, will provide the school with fresh and nutritious meals each day, meeting the needs of its various community members.

Today also marks the official launch of Wellington College International Hangzhou, the third international school of Wellington College China after Tianjin and Shanghai. The school aims to offer a world-class international education for children of expatriate families from the ages of 5 to 18. In the first phase of opening in 2018, the College will operate from Year 1 to Year 6 (ages 5 to 11) and then grow year-on-year to offer a pathway to IGCSE and A-Levels or the IB Diploma.

Mr. Rogers extended his appreciation to all the people that support the school, noting, “In spirit, Wellington College International Hangzhou was launched back in April this year. Since then we have prepared all of the resources, we have hired all of the teachers, we have put together all of the foundations, ready to open on September 3rd and provide a truly high-quality Wellington education to our Founding Pupils. Since April we have also been meeting with those founding families wishing to join us on this journey. To honour all of the work that has gone on to make that possible, we are proud to hold this ceremony to demonstrate and reaffirm our commitment to creating the very best international school in Hangzhou. We already have many community members for Wellington College International Hangzhou, some of whom are in attendance today and we look forward to creating the very best international school in Hangzhou. Those founding families are a part of something very special, and like with our founding Huili families, we look forward to building our community with them”

Expressing his gratitude to the support Wellington College Hangzhou has received from a range of stakeholders, Mr. Rogers stated “On behalf of Wellington College Hangzhou, I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere appreciation for the great support from the education departments of both Zhejiang Provincial and Hangzhou Municipal Government. Taking advantage of successfully hosting the G20 summit, Hangzhou has become a world-famous city, attracting high-end international talent, which in turn significantly increases the demand for high-quality education”.

Wellington College China is committed to providing a world-leading, well-rounded education for pupils both inside and out of the classroom. As with all Wellington College schools, the Wellington Values and Identities form the heart of the holistic education on offer. The Wellington Values of courage, respect, integrity, kindness, and responsibility are as pertinent today as they were more than 159 years ago when Wellington College was founded in the United Kingdom. The Wellington vision is for pupils to become intellectual, independent, inspired, individual and inclusive; the Wellington Identities. This is based on a model of holistic education and pastoral provision that promotes the values and develops the knowledge needed to be an effective global citizen.
