Cheer on Our Young Athletes! A Fun and Engaging Sports Day

How time flies! It has already been a year since our last Sports Day at Wellington College International Hangzhou. On Monday 4th November, parents, teachers, and community members gathered together once again at the sports pavilion to cheer for our young Wellingtonians as they participated in this year’s wide range of fun and competitive games.

To accommodate the growth of the College, this year’s Sports Day was divided into two groups. For Years 1-4, the activities were mainly focused on challenging their physical skills of running, throwing, jumping, kicking and balancing. For Years 5-8, the games were relatively more intense with additional athletic events such as the 100m sprint, 4*100m relay and tug of war to emphasize the importance of teamwork and collaboration.

All pupils were given time to warm-up and prepare during the morning assembly on the sports fields. Sports Day began in the afternoon with a House parade and opening announcements made by Mr. Paul Rogers, the Executive Master of Wellington College Hangzhou, and Ms. Kathryn Richardson, the Principal of Wellington College International Hangzhou. All of our Wellingtonians, proudly wearing their sports kits with their House logos on them, played their best to earn points for their houses. Our young athletes exemplified the value of courage as they competed in their individual and team events, but they did not forget the importance of sportsmanship as they encouraged and motivated other teams.

As one of Wellington College’s traditions, Sports Day is another event for members of our community to come together, not only to encourage our young athletes, but also to meet and chat with old and new friends. This year, many of our pupils’ parents came to support their children, making Sports Day even more special. Regardless of their skill levels, all of our pupils actively participated in each of the games, with parents cheering for their children from the sidelines in what was an exciting afternoon for all involved.

Well done to our young athletes! An awards ceremony will be held during next week’s assembly to celebrate the success of individual competitors and the winning house. We are already looking forward to seeing them showcase their abilities and skills at next year’s Sports Day.
