Wellington recognises and rewards the pursuit and achievement of excellence of our pupils in the categories of academics, music and sports. Many of the awarded scholarships and prizes provide tuition support, coaching and other benefits for pupils. In addition, awards may be complemented by a bursary on the basis of a means test.

Fees and Scholarships

Academic Scholarship Programme 2020

Wellington is proud to introduce the Academic Scholarship Programme for pupils who will enter in the academic year starting August 2020. The programme recognises outstanding academic achievement and all-round excellence.

Awards of up to 50%* of the annual tuition fees will be offered to applicants who can demonstrate a consistent and proven track record of excellent academic performance.

Applicants should also have:

  • leadership potential;
  • an exemplary behavioural record including; unfailing kindness to their peers; and
  • an ability to act as a mentor and role model.

Those pupils awarded a scholarship will be expected to fully engage with every aspect of school life and the Wellington community, including participation in sports teams and performing arts activities.

Awards of up to 100%* of the tuition fees will be available to successful applicants in Year 7 or above in August 2020. Applicants will be expected to have recorded previous academic results and CAT4 assessment data (administered as a part of the admissions process) that indicate they will achieve strong IGCSE results.

* We wish to give the opportunity of a Wellington education to outstanding pupils whose families would not be able to afford our full fees. The value of the award will be based upon the applicant family’s annual net income.

Applicants must submit a handwritten personal statement on one A4 page outlining why they believe they would make a good Wellington scholar. Scanned copies of the personal statement should be submitted to the Admissions Office by email to; admissions.wcih@wellingtoncollege.cn.  Successful candidates will be invited to a scholarship assessment day which will be held at the school shortly after submission.


Sports Award and Music Scholarships

Scholarships for Sports and Music are awarded to those pupils who will play a significant role in the life of the College. Scholars must show a high degree of ability in their chosen field whilst also demonstrating leadership in the encouragement of non-prize holding pupils. Prizes provide free specialist tuition or coaching and other benefits for pupils. In addition, prizes may be complemented by a bursary on the basis of a means test.

Pupils who would like to apply for a Sports Award or Music Scholarship should prepare and submit the following documents:

  • College application (including all supporting documents)

Music – 200-word personal statement

Sport – a CV summarising the candidate’s sporting activities and achievements over the last two years.

A preliminary review of the application will be conducted by the relevant department. Selected candidates will be invited to an assessment day, audition or trial.

General expectations:

  • Music scholarship candidates should have been studying their instrument for at least five years and standard should be around the level of ABRSM Grade 6 or above
  • Sports Award candidates should be able to demonstrate outstanding achievement in at least one sport played at Wellington (primarily football, swimming, basketball, touch rugby, netball or athletics) and should have competed at a county, regional, and/or national level when compared with UK standards


Candidates awarded Music or Sports prizes are still required to meet Wellington’s academic entry requirements.

Scholarships and prizes will only be awarded if candidates of sufficient merit present themselves.

Awards and prizes will be reviewed annually. Retention of an award will be dependent upon consistently excellent performance levels, good conduct and evidence of real contribution to the life of the college.



We want to attract the best pupils at Wellington. Bursaries are available to families applying for year 1 and above and awarded where there is an obvious need to supplement the tuition fees and are also open to include those pupils who apply for various scholarships. All applications are means-tested. Applying for a Bursary need not be a daunting process but does follow rigorous and objective means testing. The above fees will cover day-to-day tuition, the use of text and library books, public examination fees, basic stationery and general educational materials, appropriate to the particular year group. They also cover sports, physical education, attending compulsory field trips and educational visits and participating in the vast majority of the co-curricular activities (with the exception of a small number of activities for which there is a nominal charge). The tuition fee does not include the costs of school lunches, uniform or transportation. The following will also be charged separately:

  • individual music instrumental tuition; and
  • trips and events where participation is voluntary.

Extended Founding Family Discount

All pupils who enrol at or prior to the start of the 2021-2022 academic year are eligible for the 10% Extended Founding Family Discount.

  • Tuition should be paid on an annual basis, and fee payments must be made by the due date as indicated on the fee invoice
  • The discount will remain in place for the duration of the pupil’s time at the College
  • The pupil must be enrolled and start school on the first day of the 2021-2022 academic year or earlier

Sibling Discount

We offer a sibling discount of 5% for the third child and 10% for the fourth child.

Other Fees

Application Fee: RMB 2,000

The application fee is non-refundable and only valid for the academic year of the initial application. The fee is payable when the pupil’s application is submitted and is required prior to the sitting of the entrance tests and interview.

Resource Fee: RMB 18,000

The resource fee is a supplementary fee payable on acceptance to the College to support the initial investment of educational resources. The resource fee for 2020–21 is RMB 18,000. This fee is held by the College to ensure that College property including: books, reference materials, IT equipment, science equipment and other academic and co-curricular resources are duly returned to the College in a satisfactory condition. The resource fee will be refunded to parents/guardians after the return of College property and deduction of any reimbursement due to damage to the College property and deduction of any outstanding tuition fees payable to the College. However, if parents don’t follow the withdrawal policy and give the inadequate notice to school, the resource fee shall be used to offset part of that debt.


Other Fees

Meal Fee

All pupils are required to eat school lunches, except for those who have special exceptions, such as religious or medical reasons.

Lunch is provided by an external catering company, currently Sodexo, who collect lunch fees directly (and issue a fapiao).

Final meal fees will be determined by and paid directly to the catering company.

College Bus Service: RMB 19,000 per year

The College bus service is optional. The annual bus fee is RMB 19,000 payable to the College. Annual payment enjoys a 5% discounted rate compared with fees paid termly. Termly fees are as follows:

College Uniform: RMB 3,500 per full set (Approximate cost) 

All pupils are expected to be smart, tidy and business-like in their College attire. The cost of a full set of uniform is approximately RMB 3,500. Items can be purchased separately throughout the year. All uniform items and accessories are available for purchase at the school shop, payment is made directly to the uniform provider (with the fapiao also being issued by them).
