PRE-PREP

“In the Pre-Prep we aim to create lifelong learners, children who are motivated, independent and strive to achieve their best in all they do. We strongly believe that all children have to potential to become happy and successful, when supported by high expectations and a strong learning community. ”

Emma Button, Head of Pre-Prep

Pre-Prep

Our youngest Wellingtonians are encouraged to develop their own individual learning skills in stimulating, colourful and child-friendly surroundings. Pre-Prep runs from pre-nursery to year 2 and is effectively split into two areas: the Early Years (pre-Nursery to reception) and Key Stage 1 (years 1 and 2), with each having its own curriculum.

In Early Years, the children follow the English Early Years curriculum. It is a play-based approach, with regular observations forming the main part of assessment. Children also have teacher-directed tasks and daily phonics, maths, literacy, and Mandarin activities. The transition from Early Years to Key Stage 1 sees the style of learning develop to more formal lessons where they follow the English National Curriculum as a basis for the core subjects, and the International Primary Curriculum for cross-curricular topic work.

All children are taught for the majority of the day by a classroom teacher who, as well as teaching many of the principal subjects, will provide the excellent pastoral care for which Wellington is justifiably renowned. Specialist teachers lead Mandarin, music and swimming lessons in the Early Years and Key Stage 1. In year 1, physical education is also taught by a specialist teacher. In year 2, information and communication technology is added. This allows our oldest children to have experience of moving between classrooms and being taught by a range of teachers, which is excellent preparation for their move into the Prep School.

Our aim at Wellington is to help every child reach his or her potential through developing a love of learning and an inquiring, creative yet critical mind, which looks considerably beyond what is taught in the classroom.
